Purpose of Classification:
Provides nutritional care and dietetic work to patients in a medical school teaching hospital and/or a clinical research unit.

Distinguishing Characteristics:
This is a specialized classification and not part of a series.

Example of Duties:
  • Performs nutritional assessment, evaluation and planning; calculates and records meal patterns.
  • Maintains nutritional care plans, reviews medical records, correlates medical care to nutritional care, charts findings and attends surgical/medical conferences and rounds.
  • Interprets and implements the diet prescription; calculates nutrients and prepares individual meal plans.
  • Develops nutritional counseling material and provides in/out-patient counseling for patient and family members.
  • Participates in the planning and revision of the cycle menus and modified diet menus.
  • Renders nutritional assistance to those engaged in research; provides clinical nutrition instruction for students.
  • Participates in the planning and implementation of nutritional care systems.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of nutritional care, clinical dietetics and nutrition education.
  • Skill in interpreting and implementing diet prescriptions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with a wide variety of people of various educational and socio-economic backgrounds.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Bachelor's degree with a major in Dietetics and completion of an accredited dietetic internship AND two years of dietetic work experience beyond the internship.
    • Registered as a Dietitian with the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
