Purpose of Classification:
Manage and coordinate the daily operation of one or more complex facilities or departmental service units.

Distinguishing Characteristics:
This is the sixth in a series of seven classifications. The position is distinguished from the Technologist Senior in that the incumbent directly supervises the activities of animal care staff, coordinates all aspects of animal care within one or more complex facilities or departmental service units, routinely consults with researchers on the housing, feeding and care for the animals used on their projects, and assists with the development of departmental policies and procedures for animal care and use. Incumbents are typically assigned to manage either a home facility or a complex departmental service unit that operates in multiple facilities. The work schedule includes weekends and participation in the Animal Care holiday rotation.

Example of Duties:
  • Manage and coordinate the daily operation of one or more complex facilities or departmental service units
  • Supervise multiple full-time employees, or their equivalent, on a daily basis
  • Coordinate and assign work schedules for husbandry and/or cage wash staff to ensure balanced workloads and efficient work flow
  • Coordinate and oversee the training of new and existing employees in the husbandry and/or cage wash areas
  • Coordinate animal room moves to accommodate investigators, facility renovations and repairs
  • Allocate and assign space for animals, to include provision of space for incoming animals in coordination with the procurement section and researchers
  • Provide coaching or counseling for employees, in accord with UA guidelines
  • Evaluate staffing needs for assigned facility/service unit to ensure appropriate staffing levels are maintained to meet departmental goals
  • Review applications, interview and hire new employees as needed
  • May serve on selection committees for recruitment of higher level departmental positions
  • Review facility access and key requests to ensure all requirements have been met prior to approving admission to facilities
  • Review and approve performance appraisals as needed at the 3 and 6 month probationary time points; complete performance appraisals for direct reports yearly; meet with employees regularly to discuss current work performance and future goals
  • Develop new SOPs, review and revise existing SOPs
  • Consult with researchers and research staff about experiments involving animal use
  • Participate in public outreach programs on the benefits of biomedical research, such as provision of facility tours
  • Assist in departmental planning of goals and objectives and the development of policies and procedures for animal use
  • Coordinate or perform monthly facility inspections
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of supervisory practices and principles
  • Knowledge of the environmental conditions necessary for the care and use of laboratory animals
  • Knowledge in the usage and maintenance of animal equipment and supplies
  • Highly knowledgeable in research animal husbandry ensuring ability to work with and care for a variety of animals, including rodents, non-human primates, other mammals, birds, and poikilotherms
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including ability to communicate via email
  • Able to communicate in a professional, positive and helpful manner with coworkers, management and research community
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs several times throughout the day and work in an environment that requires continuous bending, stooping, twisting and turning
  • Able to maneuver large cages and cage racks within the facility, which are on wheels and can weigh well over 150 lbs

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Bachelor's degree in Biological Science or related field AND four years of experience in the care and feeding of animals, which includes at least one year direct supervisory experience; OR,
    • Associate's degree in Animal Science or related field AND six years of experience in the care and feeding of animals which includes at least one year direct supervisory experience; OR,
    • Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education approved by Human Resources
    • Possession of a current Arizona Class "D" driver's license upon employment
    • Upon employment: - Complete required UA and FBI background clearance checks - Complete Risk Assessment Questionnaire and evaluation by Occupational Health - Complete required TB testing yearly with negative test result - Receive vaccinations as deemed necessary or that are required to work with certain biohazards - Be fitted with the proper personal protection equipment for working with biohazards, which requires having minimal facial hair
    • PREFERRED QUALIFICATION: American Association of Laboratory Animal Science certification as a Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) or Certified Manager of Animal Resources (CMAR)
