Purpose of Classification:
Performs professional architectural work and may supervise a production area staffed by Drafters. Performs the in-house design of architectural projects and/or coordinates outside consultants in the design of capital construction projects. Participates in negotiations of construction projects with outside agencies in contractual arrangements.

Distinguishing Characteristics:
This is second in a series of two classifications and is distinguished from the Architect in that the Architect, Senior coordinates and manages projects in accordance with Arizona Board of Regents policies.

Example of Duties:
  • Supervises activities of subordinates.
  • Coordinates and manages projects in accordance with Arizona Board of Regents policies.
  • Meets with requester to discuss design solutions which meet the needs and budget of requester; manages the preparation of and/or prepares design and construction contract documents; prepares conceptual costs estimates.
  • Prepares project budgets at various stages and carefully monitors the project costs to ensure that the project budget is not exceeded.
  • Prepares request for proposal for outside construction managers, architects and contractors; writes advertisement based on bid calendar, reviews bids, conducts consultant selection process and makes recommendations for award of contract.
  • Negotiates fee with selected construction manager and/or architect and prepares contract ensuring cost will be within Arizona Board of Regents guidelines.
  • Coordinates with outside construction manager and architect to implement project and carefully monitors the project schedule.
  • Reviews work of consulting architects and construction managers to ensure that University standards and contractual requirements are met.
  • Resolves design conflicts during construction phase with construction manager.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of architecture and architectural principles, practices and techniques.
  • Knowledge of building materials and construction methods.
  • Knowledge of federal and state facility and code requirements.
  • Knowledge of structural, mechanical and electrical engineering relating to building costs.
  • Skill in the drafting of architectural plans.
  • Skill in organizing and coordinating the work of others.
  • Ability to effectively communicate.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Bachelor's degree in Architecture or related field AND five years of architectural experience; OR,
    • Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education approved by Human Resources.
    • Registration as an Architect in the State of Arizona.
