Title: Chemical Applicator

Purpose of Classification:
Applies chemicals to plants, trees and grass to enhance plant growth and control weeds and pests.

Distinguishing Characteristics:
This is a skilled and specialized classification that is not part of a series. Working Conditions - contaminated air; extreme temperatures; and hazardous materials.

Example of Duties:
  • Sets up and operates hand and power spray equipment to spray, dust and/or spread various chemicals and other designated materials including pesticides, herbicides, soil sterilants, grass killer, hormones, fertilizers, seeds and specified soil amendments.
  • Installs, adjusts and performs minor repairs on application equipment.
  • Maintains work area, chemical storage, equipment and records on chemical application activities in compliance with federal, state and university regulations and policies.
  • Assists in maintaining and updating Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for chemical use.
  • Assists in training grounds staff in pest and weed control safety and in fertilizer use applications
  • Maintains equipment and tools used in chemical application and coordinates outside maintenance as authorized.)
  • Instructs helpers as required in applying sprays, dusts and other materials.
  • Inspects outdoor areas and recommends extermination and pest control methods.
  • Schedules pest and weed controls.
  • May assist in the upkeep of the grounds.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of federal and state regulations related to chemicals applied to weeds, turf and ornamental horticulture, such as those established by the Environmental Protection Agency, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and A. R. S. Title 32 Chapter 22, Structural Pest Management Regulation.
  • Skill in the safe application of chemicals to weeds, turf and ornamental horticulture.
  • Ability to effectively communicate.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Two years of chemical applications experience; OR, any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved AND,
    • Possession of a current restricted use pesticide certification from the State of Arizona Office of Pest Management in the following categories: Right of Way Weeds, Ornamental and Turf, AND
    • Possession of a current Arizona driver\'s license upon employment.
