Purpose of Classification:
Performs routine maintenance and repair on gas and diesel automotive and heavy equipment.

Distinguishing Characteristics:
This is a semiskilled position. This is second in a series of seven classifications. Working conditions - restricted movement, dirty environment or contamination, intense noise, hazardous materials; lifts or carries heavy objects.

Example of Duties:
  • Performs routine maintenance on vehicles such as replacing spark plugs and shock absorbers, adjusting clutches, checking and balancing wheels, checking for proper tire alignment and performing minor tune ups.
  • Performs routine electrical work on automotive equipment such as installing batteries and terminals, repairing and adjusting lights, repairing generators and starters.
  • Assists in the general overhaul and repair of engines, transmissions on gas and diesel automobiles and heavy equipment.
  • Road tests vehicles to locate defects in operation before the return of equipment to active use and responds to service calls.
  • Performs emissions tests.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of automotive repair and maintenance.
  • Skill in auto repair and maintenance.
  • Ability to effectively communicate.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • One year automotive mechanic experience; OR,
    • Completion of a one year vocational training program in automotive mechanics; OR,
    • Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education approved by Human Resources.
    • May be required to obtain a current 609 Mobile Air Conditioning Certification.
    • May be required to obtain a current Arizona Emissions Inspections Certification.
    • Possession of current Arizona Type D, B or C driver's license upon employment.
