Purpose of Classification:
Leads and participates in the repair, overhaul, and maintenance of vehicles or heavy equipment.

Distinguishing Characteristics:
This is a lead position. This is fourth in a series of seven classifications. It is distinguished from the Automotive Mechanic in that incumbents lead the work of Automotive Mechanics. Working conditions - restricted movement, dirty environment, air contamination, intense noise, hazardous materials; lifts or carries heavy objects.

Example of Duties:
  • Coordinates the activities of subordinates.
  • Inspects work performed by Automotive Mechanics to insure shop standards have been met.
  • Requisitions parts, computes work orders and prepares service records and reports as required.
  • Overhauls and repairs engines and transmissions on gas and diesel equipment.
  • Performs tune-ups on vehicles.
  • Overhauls repairs and/or replaces other mechanical parts such as steering and brake systems.
  • Replaces shock absorbers, checks and balances wheels and checks for proper tire alignment.
  • Performs diversified electrical work on all automotive and related equipment such as servicing, installing batteries and terminals, repairing and adjusting lights, repairing generators and starters.
  • Uses diagnostic equipment as an aid in locating vehicles defects.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs or replaces digital electronic components and computers.
  • Fabricates and/or reconstructs equipment by using gas, arc, MIG or TIG welding methods.
  • Performs emission control repair, replacement and testing on all required vehicles.
  • Road tests vehicles to locate operational defects prior to returning to active use.
  • Drives buses and other vehicles for special events or field trips as needed.
  • Overhauls, repairs and maintains heavy equipment.
  • Operates shop machines such as milling and metal lathes to rebuild or fabricate machine parts.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge in the diagnosis and repair of automotive and heavy equipment.
  • Skill in the diagnosis and repair of automotive and/or heavy equipment.
  • Skill in operating shop tools and machines.
  • Skill in modifying, designing and fabricating special purpose equipment.
  • Ability to effectively communicate.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Five years experience in the diagnosis, repair and maintenance of automobiles and/or heavy equipment; OR,
    • Completion of a one year vocational training program in automotive mechanics AND four years experience in the diagnosis, repair and maintenance of automobiles and/or heavy equipment; OR,
    • Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education approved by Human Resources.
    • May be required to obtain a current 609 Mobile Air Conditioning Certification.
    • May be required to obtain a current Arizona Emissions Inspections Certification.
    • Possession of current Arizona Type D, B or C driver's license upon employment.
