Purpose of Classification:
Performs entry level professional, detailed accounting assignments requiring knowledge of accounting theory and principles.

Distinguishing Characteristics:
This is first in a series of five classifications. Incumbents perform some tasks that are similar to those of the Accounting Specialist classification but are required to perform a wider range or diversity of accounting tasks that require fundamental applications of accounting theories and principles. It is distinguished from the Accountant classification in that incumbents typically perform simple reconciliation or schedule preparations, have work regularly monitored by a higher level accountant and perform some non-professional tasks.

Example of Duties:
  • Prepares straightforward or recurring accounting schedules, statements or reports for management or outside agencies to reflect financial situation; assists higher level accountants in more complex or specialized assignments.
  • Arranges different types of data into a variety of formats such as charts, graphs or tables for management comparison purposes.
  • Reviews reports, fund or account statements and bank statements; investigates irregularities and reports to supervisor; makes adjustments and necessary journal entries.
  • Records revenues, disbursements, expenses or other transactions by posting to records or ledgers; takes trial balances and prepares simple analyses and/or reports.
  • Analyzes transactions and documents procedures to ensure compliance with accounting principles and university regulations.
  • Analyzes accounting data and makes general interpretations and recommendations.
  • Advises lower level staff regarding appropriate accounting procedures and methods.
  • Reviews computer reports and investigates and reports or corrects inconsistencies and errors.
  • Performs steps in analysis, such as computing standard ratios.
  • Trains and monitors or reviews work of clerical accounting staff.
  • Keeps informed by researching and evaluating appropriate professional and related legal literature as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of accounting practices, procedures and generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Skill in performing detailed numerical computations.
  • Skill in preparing detailed reports.
  • - Skill in the use of computer hardware and software.
  • - Ability to effectively communicate.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related area with accounting coursework; OR,
    • Four years progressively responsible and diverse accounting experience and coursework in which a broad exposure to all areas of accounting and accounting principles, practices and procedures was acquired; OR,
    • Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education approved by Human Resources.
