Purpose of Classification:
Receives payments from customers for fees or goods/services received.

Distinguishing Characteristics:
This is second in a series of two classifications. The progression of the series from Cashier, Senior is to Teller, Senior then Teller, Lead, as long as experience and skills acquired meet the minimum requirements. Cashiers are distinguished from Tellers by the types of transactions. Cashiers accept payments or give refunds for customers for fees or goods/services while Tellers execute a variety of transactions and services including accepting payments for a variety of university accounts, cashing checks, checking account balances and transferring funds. The Senior level is for incumbents accepting payment for fees or goods/services that require additional documentation, reporting and/or use of a complex cash register or account methods. Incumbents exercise independent judgment within established limits and work relatively independently, referring only difficult or complex problems to supervisor.

Example of Duties:
  • Accepts cash, checks or bankcards for payment of fees or cost of goods/services received; completes check and bankcard transactions according to established procedures.
  • Reviews order or fee schedule to calculate total fee/price and counts money, gives change and issues receipt for funds received.
  • Post transaction on cash register or other approved means.
  • Balances cash drawer against receipts, resolves discrepancies; deposits funds into proper accounts using basic accounting practices.
  • Prepares summary reports to reflect cash flow.
  • Receives and fills telephone or mail orders; prepares invoices and bills according to established procedure.
  • Prepares and maintains various records, reports and files of transaction data.
  • Trains new cashiers and/or oversees other cashiers.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of basic arithmetic.
  • Knowledge of basic bookkeeping.
  • Skill in cashiering procedures and techniques.
  • Skill in dealing effectively with people and problem solving.
  • Ability to effectively communicate.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Two years of related clerical experience which included six months counting, receiving or disbursing money; OR
    • Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education approved by Human Resources.
