Purpose of Classification:
Hands-on leadership, teaching, management, and support position for the Equine Center, located within the Campus Agriculture Center. The primary focus of this position will be to lead and coordinate student workers, instruction of equine classes, monitor and provide health care for the resident horse herd, which includes stallions, mares and foals.

Distinguishing Characteristics:
This is first in a series of two classifications. This classification is distinguished from Manager, Equine Center in that incumbents typically supervise student workers. Incumbents are required to live on the premises in a university provided residence. This classification requires a flexible work schedule in order to accommodate changing schedule due to care for the horses, including weekends

Example of Duties:
  • Supervises two or more student workers and/or employees, or their equivalent, on a regular basis
  • Monitor and maintain herd health care
  • Develop and present curriculum in Horsemanship and EAT/EAL
  • Lead, train and supervise all student workers including IACUC protocols
  • Makes decisions regarding hiring, evaluation, promotion and termination of employees, or makes related recommendations that are given particular weight.
  • Develops, plans, schedules and monitors work projects and Equine Center activities such as maintaining facility cleanliness, maintaining facility safety for both animals and humans, IACUC/AAALAC inspection and site visit preparation, etc.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of supervisory practices and principles.
  • Highly knowledgeable (but not limited to) Equine Reproduction, foaling, pre-post mare/foaling care, Equine husbandry and Equine handling-training demonstrating safety for all those involved
  • Knowledge of teaching principles, practices and procedures
  • Skill in teaching applications
  • Knowledge of educational and training resources
  • Well versed in problem solving while handling emergency situations
  • Ability to maintain a professional composure during highly stressful situations
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Able to communicate in a positive manner with co-workers and students

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Bachelor's degree in Animal Science or Equine Science AND
    • At least 5 years of full-time employment in the Equine Industry and 3 years in the teaching field; OR,
    • Eight years of work experience in the Equine Industry; OR,
    • Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education approved by Human Resources
    • Ability to lift 50 pounds
    • Possession of a current Arizona Type D driver's license upon employment
