Animal Cage Wash Technician

Purpose of Classification:

Within University Animal Care (UAC), perform duties related to the care, cleaning, preparation and assembly of animal cages and equipment.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

This is the first in a series of seven classifications. This position is responsible for processing clean and dirty caging and operating Cage Wash related equipment. Incumbents are generally assigned to a specific Cage Wash location. Duties include assembling clean caging, processing dirty caging, cleaning and stocking, preparing caging for autoclaving, and doing facility laundry. The work schedule includes participating in the holiday Cage Wash rotation and may include compensated overtime.

Example of Duties:

  • Process dirty caging
  • Unload cage washers and process clean caging
  • Unloads wash racks
  • Stack and store equipment
  • Assemble cages and fill cage orders
  • Prepare cage set-ups for autoclaving
  • Clean auto-water racks utilizing flush station
  • Stock and maintain clean cages directly accessible by investigators
  • Maintain stock of bedding and supplies for area
  • Assist in the processing of facility laundry
  • Clean cage wash areas and storage rooms
  • Assist with disposal of facility trash
  • Participate in the holiday rotation in assigned area
  • May receive training in Cage Wash areas at other facilities
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Able to communicate in a professional, positive and helpful manner with coworkers, management and research community
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs several times throughout the day and work in an environment that requires continuous bending, stooping, twisting and turning
  • Able to maneuver large cages and cage racks within the facility, which are on wheels and can weigh well over 150 lbs

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Upon employment:
    - Complete required UA background check
    - Complete Risk Assessment Questionnaire and evaluation by Occupational Health
    - Receive vaccinations as deemed necessary
    - Be fitted with the proper personal protection equipment, which requires having minimal facial hair
