Purpose of Classification:

Supervises, coordinates and performs work in the day to day operations at a University owned farm used for agricultural and/or livestock management instruction and/or research. Schedules and assigns farming work to staff and student workers.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

This is fifth in a series of six classifications. Incumbents supervise the work of other employees in a wide range of farm tasks. Incumbents may be required to live on the premises in a University owned residence. This classification requires a flexible work schedule in order to meet the needs of the researchers. Incumbents work outside in adverse weather conditions.

Example of Duties:

  • Supervises two or more full-time employees, or their equivalent, on a regular basis.
  • Makes decisions regarding hiring, evaluation, promotion and termination of employees or makes related recommendations that are given particular weight.
  • Plans, monitors and schedules farming activities and/or performs farming activities such as planting, cultivating, irrigating, harvesting, applying herbicide, pesticide and fertilizer.
  • Receives work requests from project leaders who are performing research on designated plots of land or with research animals and discusses feasibility with Farm Manager and/or supervisor.
  • Monitors and/or performs the care, feeding and watering of animals.
  • Observes animals to detect signs of illness or injury and treats minor injuries and illnesses; contacts veterinarian to treat serious illness or injury.
  • Monitors the processing and/or processes animals which includes weighing the animal, assigning ear tag number and attaching tag to ear, vaccinating, castrating and dehorning.
  • Monitors the mixing and/or mixes experimental rations and feed supplements for animals, according to experimental requirements.
  • Breeds cow herd and selects herd sires for artificial insemination purposes.
  • Attends animals during and after birth of offspring.
  • Inspects and coordinates the repair and/or repairs farm equipment and machinery such as tractors and trucks.
  • Inventories and requisitions such items as fertilizer, seed, pesticide and ingredients for animal feed.
  • Plans and coordinates the repair of and constructs buildings, sheds and fences; coordinates the repair of minor electrical, plumbing and carpentry problems.
  • Maintains records such as gas usage, work completed, crops planted, number of animals bred, sold and slaughtered, food consumption and animal production activities.
  • Drives truck to transport supplies, equipment and animals needed for farm operation.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of supervisory practices and principles.
  • Knowledge of large scale farming operations and procedures.
  • Skill in the use of tools utilized in the repair of equipment and facilities.
  • Skill in maintaining records.
  • Ability to effectively communicate.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Two years of college with course work in Agriculture, Animal Sciences or related field AND one year of experience in related area; OR,
  • Three years of experience working on a major farm operation; OR,
  • Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education approved by Human Resources.
  • Possession of a current Arizona Type D driver's license, upon employment.
