Bereavement Leave

Bereavement is an administrative leave/absence available to full-benefits-eligible employees who are in a paid status. It provides three paid working days off for a death in the family. An employee may be granted two additional paid working days to attend or arrange funeral services out-of-state.

Family is defined as:

  • A parent (natural parent, step-parent, adoptive parent, or surrogate parent)
  • Parent-in-law
  • Brother or sister
  • Spouse
  • Child (natural child, adopted child, foster child, or stepchild)
  • Grandparents
  • Grandchildren
  • Brother or sister-in-law
  • Son-in-law or daughter-in-law
  • Any other person who is a member of the employee's established household

For family members not listed above, employees may use three days of sick time plus two additional days to attend or arrange a funeral out of state.

Supervisors may approve additional sick time for employees who cannot work due to grief over the passing of a family member. This administrative leave/absence has no impact on the employee's benefits.

Procedure

The employee submits a request in writing to the supervisor as soon as possible.
