Supervisors: How to Identify an Employee in Need of FML

Employees may be unaware they can use job-protected FML for their leave of absence.  If you notice these employee absences as a supervisor, notify your leave specialist.

  • An employee informs the supervisor about their own or their spouse's pregnancy, adoption, or fostering of a child.
  • An employee is absent due to a chronic health condition or an industrial injury for more than 3 consecutive days.
  • An employee frequently arrives late, leaves early, or is absent due to medical reasons.
  • An employee has frequent doctor’s appointments.
  • An employee's spouse, child, or parent is placed in a hospital, hospice, or similar facility overnight and will remain absent for 3 or more days.
  • An employee may need to care for a covered armed forces member or be absent from work because the member has been called to active duty.
