Benefits Changes for 2018

Earlier today, the Arizona Department of Administration (ADOA) notified us about some substantial changes that will be made to the benefits plans offered for the upcoming calendar year (January 1, 2018 – December 31, 2018).  

Most University of Arizona employees are enrolled in medical plans administered by ADOA. The changes to these plans are highlighted below, and additional information can also be found on ADOA's Benefits Services Division website, including frequently asked questions.

What is Changing?

  • Co-pays will no longer be required for routine preventive care. Therefore, wellness exams, immunizations, preventive care medications, and a wide range of screening tests will be free.
  • While UA will continue to pay 90% of the premium costs for employees, employee premiums and co-pays will be increasing for the first time since 2011 due to rising healthcare costs. The average premium increase will be approximately $6.00 per paycheck, with family coverage not to exceed approximately $12.00 per paycheck. Changes are not being made to the medical coverage or to the carriers – only to copays and coinsurance.* See below for the new 2018 rates as applicable to the University of Arizona and ADOA's Benefits Services Division website for details on co-pay changes.
  • Cigna Dental Care HMO will be offered as a new dental provider, replacing Total Dental Administrators. The new Cigna plan will be offered with lower rates. Delta Dental will remain as a dental provider.

When is Benefits Open Enrollment?

Benefits Open Enrollment will begin on October 30, 2017, and continue through November 17, 2017. All employees must take action and re-enroll during this year’s Benefits Open Enrollment if they wish to have coverage on January 1, 2018.

Additional communication will be provided soon to employees enrolled in the UA Alternative Plan for Domestic Partners.
