Vacation, sick time, and parental leave are just the beginning of the University's robust leave package. Follow the links on this page for information about eligibility, application procedures, and other frequently asked questions.

Accrued Time

Note: Procedures for administering leaves can vary by campus and department/unit. Consult with your supervisor or a leave advisor about internal expectations and procedures.

Paid Sick Time

Accrued paid time to care for self or immediate family members during illness.


Accrued paid time to use for personal time off.

Holidays & University Closures

To be paid for the holidays and University closure days, employees must be on “approved paid status” on the day before and the day after the closure. This means they must be in the University payroll system or at work or on prearranged paid leave (such as vacation).


Ten paid holidays are offered each year.

At some point in your career, you may be faced with a life event that requires you to be away from work, some for an extended period of time. Please connect with your leave advisors to assist you in managing the leave you need to handle these life events and to ensure a smooth transition back to your role within the University community.

Parental Leave
Up to 12 weeks of paid and 12 weeks of unpaid parental leave for each employee parent.

Family and Medical Leave (FML)
Job-protected leave for certain qualifying medical and family reasons.

Three paid days for a family passing. Two additional paid days may be granted for out-of-state funeral services.

Jury Duty
Paid absence is available to eligible employees who are called for jury duty or as material witness.

Approved Personal Leave (Staff)
An unpaid leave is granted to employees whose requests are approved by their department

Compassionate Transfer of Leave (Staff)
Compassionate transfer of leave may be available to help you if you cannot work for an extended period and exhaust all your available paid time off. 

Volunteer Service
Full benefits-eligible employees can use up to eight hours of paid time off each calendar year to volunteer at a qualifying Nonprofit or 501(c)(3) organization or a federal, state, or local government agency.

Military Training Leave
Leave with pay for active duty or active duty training for a period not to exceed 30 working days in any 2 consecutive calendar years.

Extended Active Military Leave
Employees who are members of the National Guard or a reserve component of the U.S. Armed Forces shall receive their regular compensation during a period of active duty or active duty training.

Approved Extended Leave - Appointed Personnel
A Leave of Absence without pay may be granted for a period of up to one calendar year.

Sabbatical leave enables appointed personnel to advance their profession, remain effective in current positions, or render the greatest possible service to The University of Arizona.

Prestigious Awards Leave
Enables appointed personnel to accept prestigious external fellowships or awards for research or creative activity that do not provide the recipient's normal full salary during the period of the award.
