What Does & Does Not Qualify as a Leave of Absence?
This IS a Leave of Absence
A leave of absence (LOA) refers to an extended period of time away from work due to significant life events. A leave of absence allows employees time away from work by federal or state law and offers job protection.
Common reasons are:
- childbirth
- adoption
- caring for an ill family member
- serious health conditions
- military leave
This is NOT a Leave of Absence
A leave of absence is not a short-term absence from work for reasons like a typical vacation day, a sick day, or using standard paid time off (PTO) and where federal law does not mandate employers to provide paid time off for it.
Talk to your supervisor, unit/college/department or Faculty Affairs for specific leaves and time off.
